Self-Sanitize SpikerTM (SSS)

Antimicrobial packaging is not a new concept in the food packaging industry, as it is relatively focused on extending the shelf life of highly perishable food products or allowing food processors to reduce chemical preservatives. What about non-food packaging?

New Island Printing Group and Nano and Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI) have worked on developing this revolutionary antimicrobial paper packaging to provide a SAFE, HYGIENEC and ECO-FRIENDLY products for customers.

Following COVID-19, we’ve developed new health and hygiene habits that are here to stay even in post-pandemic. Consumers have altered their lifestyle, and spending habits and are much more conscientious about consumption choices especially when considering product safety.

New Island believes that since packaging is often the first point of contact for any product, antimicrobial packaging can provide customers with an increased level of product protection against potentially harmful microbes.

Bacteria and viruses that cause diseases can easily find their way onto packaging materials and pose health risks upon contact.

  • Bacteria on paper surfaces can proliferate to over millions within 24 hours, while viruses can survive for days.
  • Common bacteria that may affect our health E.Coli, Campylobacter, Listeria and Salmonella.
  • SARS CoV (pandemic 2002), the virus retains infectivity on different substrates for up to 9 days, as compared to the influenza virus, which demonstrates a relatively long persistence in the environment up to 4 weeks. Both viruses are airborne transmitted infectious agents, however, they may also be transmitted via hand-surface contacts, supporting the relevance of hand hygiene and personal protection against infection.
  • It is essential to develop active packaging with antimicrobial properties to prevent contamination and cross-transmission of microorganisms during storage, transportation, and the use of packed products.

What is Self-Sanitize SpikerTM (SSS)

Since the outbreak of Covid-19, New Island Printing Group and NAMI have worked on developing this revolutionary antimicrobial coating for paper packaging, to provide a safe, hygienic and eco-friendly product for consumers. Self-Sanitize Spiker TM (SSS) is the brand and product name for this coating. This product was officially launched and brought to market in October 2022.

Although it may seem that we have come to the end phases of COVID, but this product does not purely focus on killing COVID, our objective is to provide a safer option to customers and to provide protection against viruses and bacteria that may be easily transmitted or spread by means of touch.

Since Covid-19, people have become much more aware of hygiene and we have adopted many new cleanliness or hygiene practices. Such as washing hands with soap for 30 seconds. Consumers now will have a much higher expectation towards packaging safety. Self-Sanitize Spiker TM (SSS) was developed with the structure of viruses and bacteria in mind, which means that although viruses of even if Covid may continue to evolve, SSS will be able to have an effective antimicrobial effect.

How does it work?

Unlike conventional antimicrobial materials that rely exclusively on killing actions, our Self-Sanitize SpikerTM (SSS) packaging not only kills microorganisms by direct physical contact, but also avoids the accumulation of their debris. SSS varnish first deactivates and destroys the bacteria and virus left on the surface. Gradual build-up of microbial debris on the surface would normally block and hinder antimicrobial activity, however SSS’s antifouling properties can repel debris off the surface allowing the surface to be clean and have a sustained antimicrobial effect.

Achievements

Accredited laboratories have independently confirmed that the coated paper packaging kills over 99.9% of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria; whilst also deactivating most viruses, including human coronavirus (COVID-19). This product is suitable for anyone concerned about healthcare, especially applicable to pharmaceutical, beauty, food and healthcare industry products.

  • SSS varnish is aqueous and is not harmful to the environment.
  • SSS is developed for food-grade primary and secondary container surface use.
  • SSS varnish pass inhibition tests, and no leaching was found, therefore it will not migrate. SSS coated paper packaging complies with EUR, USA, Japan, China and South-Korea chemical safety regulations.
  • SSS have received silver award at the 2022 International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva
