2020 is New Island’s second year in supporting the Pink Revolution initiative of the Hong Kong Cancer Fund. With recent global pandemic uncertainties, we are most reminded to reach out and provide care to those in need of support. On Friday 23^rd October, all staff were encouraged to dress in PINK, take pictures in our selfie corner and share on social media to raise breast cancer awareness. Once again, we are proud to be a part of this event and to have the opportunity to show our support and love towards women touched by breast cancer.

 

 

The Cancer Fund’s Pink Revolution is a breast cancer education and fundraising campaign that runs yearly in October for a duration of one month. This campaign highlights the importance of breast awareness and encourages women to “Be Smart. Self-Check” for early signs of breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and ranks 3^rd leading causes amongst cancer related deaths for women in Hong Kong. One in fourteen women in Hong Kong are at risk of developing breast cancer. The Cancer Fund offers unique services that aims to help breast cancer patients and their families through the cancer journey from diagnosis, recover treatment, and rehabilitation services. There are also free programs and services such as hotline, counselling services, peer-support, and recovery packs for women undergoing breast cancer surgery.

For more than 55 years, New Island has faced and overcome many challenges and we will still strongly live by our core values “WE TAKE PRECAUTION AND KEEP OURSELVES, OUR PEERS AND OUR PRODUCTS SAFE”. This value keeps us strong and guides us when we face uncertainties ahead. Our thoughts go out to families that have been affected by this unimaginable event. We are appreciative to our healthcare professionals who are in the frontline doing ‘whatever it takes’ to contain this coronavirus. We also play an important part to do “whatever it takes” to stay virus-free and continue to deliver our products and services worldwide on-time in the safest possible way.

Keeping our customers and employees top of mind, we have taken the following steps:

• New Island Printing has been fully operational since 16^th March 2020, all our factories are now open and in production.
• Our staff is 98% fully returned to their work positions. 2% are returning as their home town start to release lock-down.
• We have monitored our staff health and travels since 20^th January 2020 and have kept good communication throughout this period.
• We have ZERO staff confirmed or admitted with coronavirus.
• In order to keep our staff, New Island has implemented high cut cost measures. So far, we have not yet come to the point where we need lay off any staff. Our returned staff are happy to be back at their work stations and are highly motivated.
• All non-essential business travel are cancelled.
• New Island will still maintain strict preventive measures until the virus has been fully contained.

Shanghai New Island Worker’s Union initiated a “Giving with Love Donation Day” which was held on 31^st December 2019. All proceeds were to support one of the main care programs under the Shanghai Songjiang District Federation of Trade Unions to help distressed workers and their families within Songjiang District.

The Shanghai Songjiang District Federation of Trade Unions’ main care program includes employment services, worker assistance services, care services to help migrant workers, care funds to help workers that have been injured in harsh weather or high-risk environments, various town improvement project and other community service projects. In 2019, the collective donation received from all workers unions in Songjiang District amounted to 3.2 million yuan, which supported various services and assisted 4,584 migrant and distressed workers.

Shanghai New Island Worker’s Union was established earlier in the year of 2019 and this event was also the first time the union has arranged a donation day. Throughout the day, New Island staff actively participated and generously showed their support in giving kindness to those in need. In 2020, New Island Shanghai and Shanghai New Island Worker’s Union have plans to commit and participate in more social activities that contribute in improving our community, poverty relief and helping disadvantaged groups.

Mid-December 2019, Dongguan New Island participated in the “Home Security Service Project for the Elderly”; a project jointly organized by the Dongguan City Association of Enterprise with Foreign Investment Daling Shan Branch with China Dongguan Lion’s Club Songshan Lake Service Team. This project sets to provide safety living equipment for 58 elderly homes located across two small local villages in Dongguan.

One week prior to the event, the staff from Ailing Kan Village, Dasha Village together with the fellow members of the China Dongguan Lion’s Club Songshan Lake Service Team conducted a home visit to the 58 registered elderly’s residence to understand the family’s living environment and actual needs. The collected information was collaborated for purchasing supplies.

 

The main purpose of this project was to add assistive living equipment into the households of the elderly to reduce physical injuries and prevent suffering caused by falls. On the day of the event after the opening ceremony, all participants including representing staff from Dongguan New Island were divided into 10 teams to visit and bring supplies to 30 households in Ailing Kan Village and 28 households in Dasha Village. Supplies included rice, cooking oil, biscuits, toilet chairs, wheelchairs, smart crutches / quad crutches, shower chairs, bathroom rails, diapers, urine-proof pads, massage pads, quilts, electric heater, hearing aids, non-slip mats, nursing beds, healing ointments, rheumatoid oil, etc., as well as 500 yuan for each elderly family.

Our New Island Staff and other members of their team, spent time chatting with these families, showed our care for them and with patience taught them how to use the aiding equipment safely. If fact, most elderly families didn’t realize or felt they had anything missing. Instead, they have only very simple needs. What was more important to them and hope for the most was ‘not to be on their own’ and for someone to show love, help them and care for them. The biggest reward for the day was being able to spend time with these families and to see smile on their faces.

New Island will continue to express love and care to our community with pride and action.
